SUSTAINABILITY

- Sustainability of these actions are very important

- Getting rid of these problems shouldn’t be looked at from the present perspective but at how these actions will be able to preserve the streams for the duration of the future

- The sustainability of these actions will help the economy benefit by not spending as much money over the years - The government won’t need to worry about the spending and wasting time figuring out other possible solutions. - Hawaii’s people need to continue to keep restoring and preserving by doing that they should go back to the Hawaiian culture and re-implement their cultural practices such as the lo’i fields

- When the Hawaiians had that type of irrigation systems they were able to live sustainably and provide food for themselves and not rely on food to be shipped to them

- By having sustainable solutions Hawaii will become a more independent state and not need to rely on outside resources; in the long run this will save the government plenty of money.

IMPLICATIONS

- He’eia watershed is being restored by being replanted with Taro and Rice.

        - caused the native animals and plants to be destroyed or diminished.

- The Nature Conservancy Hawaii Marine Program and the Ko’olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club are making efforts in trying to restore native vegetation in the wetland and stream.

       - The purpose of these efforts is to protect and restore the habitat for the aquatic species in Hawaii’s streams and oceans.

       - This will survive in the long run but will take a while for the entire wetland to be restored.

- Superfund site

       - It’s purpose is to treat and monitor underground water and wells. When monitored the government will be aware of where the water is contaminated and be able to treat it as soon as possible with GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) filters. Gulches have very bad effects on the streams

        - Ex) the gulches in the Waikele watershed are filled with urban and agricultural runoff such as chicken poop, household chemicals, and military uses.

         - By restricting damage-susceptible development this would minimize the destruction this contaminated water would cause during flooding.

          - This action will not survive the future because the developers of these communities see a lot benefits that the gulches provide, they don’t see how these gulches will after the streams in the long run. There are also actions that want to protect and preserve lands for agriculture.

- Supersucker, which has only been used in the Kaneohe Bay.

          - This machine is very effective in that it removes algae faster than it can grow and plants sea urchins in the reefs to keep the algae in check and control it’s growth

          - this process will take many years, even though there is two supersuckers working more will still be needed, since only the north side of the bay is improving.

          - The sustainability of these actions are very important because getting rid of these problems shouldn’t be looked at from the present perspective but at how these actions will be able to preserve the streams for the duration of the future.
