CURRENTLY HAPPENING...

  • managed by the USFWS to protect native species, plants, and their habitats

  • The O'ahu Forest NWR  contains some of the last presevered native Hawaiian forests

  • The NWR Conceptual Management Plan foucses on the protection, restoration, awareness, and management of threatened endangered native speices, plants, and habitats

National Wildlife Refuges

Watershed Partnerships

  • Ko'olau Moutains Watershead Partnership (KMWP) protects the forests areas in the Ko'olau Moutain range by working with landowners to improve the quailty and well-being of the area

  • Some of the partnerships include; Kamehameha Schools, Bishop Museum, State Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, U.S. Army, and many others (refer to Central O'ahu Watershed Study, 2007: 76)

  • "State Watershed Protection and Management Program Act 152: Relating to WatershedProtection (2000) identified the Wai'anae Mountains as a potential watershed partnership area due to its agricultural and domestic water sources, native species ecosystems, hunting, hiking, offshore waters, and cultural resources.79" (Central O'ahu Watershad Study, 2007: 76).

Manana Valley Watershead Protection and Habitait Restoration Project

  • "This Federally funded project, through the City and County of Honolulu, is an acquisition and restoration project of Mänana Valley. This multi-species conservation effort includes critical habitat for 15 listed plants and O'ahu 'elepaio, as well as essential habitat for the O'ahu tree snail. This parcel contains five distinct forest types, including wet and mesic forest types and four miles of stream, and is adjacent to the Ewa Forest Reserve" (Central O'ahu Watershed Study, 2007: 77).

USGS

  • U.S. Geological Survey

  • They are committed to presenting findings of overall quality of life, and facilitates of water, biological, energy, and mineral resources.

  • Started the NAWQA, National Water-Quality Assessment, a program that supports national, regional and local information that helps with water-quality management and policy decisions.

  • They have done studies showing the quality of Waikakalaua stream and have stated ways to improve the health of stream life.

 

Clean Water Act & Clean Air Act

  • have put into light the Endangered Species Act, one of the most powerful laws in the world in which can stop any development on federal, state and private lands.

  • State wise though, owns 28% of the land while the federal owns 18%, has passed some of their own.

             - Ex) the legacy land act and the legacy lands conservation program (created 2005).

                      - What they do through the Board of Land and Natural resources to facilitate the purchase of lands,                          for the purpose of conservation.
