​HISTORY

Anicent Hawaiian Times

 

  • "Hawaiians used the ahupua'a system for land management and political boundaries before the Great Mahele of 1848" (Central O'ahu Watershed Study, 2007:81).

  • Because the abudnce of food was so rich in the area of Pearl Harbor, the population grew immensely, being the second highest density in anicent Hawaiian times

 

Post-Westernization

  • "Western development in Central O'ahu began in the late 1800s, after the establishmentof the Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawai'i in 1840" (Central Watershed Study, 2007: 82).

  • 1930s: about 1.5 million non-native trees where planted to try and halt the ersion of native forests

 

 

  • Civilian Conservation Crops also began to build roads and trails through the Honoulu Preserve area as well

  • 1939-44: about 3,000 acres of sugar cane lands were converted to military useage (on the coastal plain)

  • December 7th, 1941: the bombing of Pearl Harbor changed the whole dynmatic of the area, making the Pearl Peninsula, and the surrounding area the property of the Military

Ahupua'a

 

Here is a diagram of what a Hawaiian Ahupua'a would look like back in the olden days.

 

Ahupua'a's were land divisons that Hawaiians made so the land would connect out into the ocean as well as to divide the land among people to take care of.

 

They would use the life given to them by the earth and then return what they took. A never-ending cycle.
